A group of young professionals working with DIGITAL AXIS Ltd, a company specializing in information and communication technology (ICT) equipment, visited the Musanze Genocide Memorial where victims killed at the former Court of Appeal (Cour d’Appel) are laid to rest. During this visit, they also provided humanitarian support to selected Genocide survivors.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the youth at DIGITAL AXIS Ltd to deepen their understanding of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. All participants were born after the Genocide, making such educational visits essential for preserving historical memory and fostering informed awareness among the younger generation.
The visit is also intended to strengthen their ability to critically engage with and counter misinformation, denial, and distortion of Genocide history, particularly on digital platforms where such narratives can spread rapidly.
The youth condemned the role played by some members of their generation during the Genocide, acknowledging that young people were among those who committed atrocities. At the same time, they expressed appreciation for the young members of the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) who risked their lives to stop the Genocide and rescue victims.
One of the participants, Munezero Valentine, said: “What we have seen confirms that the Genocide against the Tutsi was carefully planned by the government in power at the time, and that some of the perpetrators were young people. However, it is encouraging that those who stopped it were also young nkotanyi, who showed great sacrifice. We are committed to protecting what has been achieved and ensuring it is never destroyed.”
Kazintwari Jean de Dieu, Head of Communications at DIGITAL AXIS Ltd, noted that the experience would empower them to confront Genocide denial and minimization more effectively.
He stated:“We come from different parts of the country; the oldest among us was born in 1999 and the youngest in 2005. Visiting the former Court of Appeal Memorial and learning about the horrific killings of Tutsi in what was supposed to be a place of justice is deeply disturbing.”
“As active users of social media, we recognize that this history belongs to us. We are determined to share the truth and challenge those who attempt to deny or trivialize such events.”
In addition to the memorial visit, staff from DIGITAL AXIS Ltd who deal in a variety of modern technological products including smartphones such as iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung, as well as computers, printers, and accessories also donated food supplies to Genocide survivors in Musanze District.
Their actions reflect a commitment to remembrance, social responsibility, and the active role of youth in preserving historical truth while supporting affected communities.
